Four Polling Agencies Announce Presidential Election Forecasts... Lee and Yoon Neck-and-Neck Race
[Asia Economy Reporter Naju-seok] The approval ratings of Lee Jae-myung, the presidential candidate of the Democratic Party of Korea, and Yoon Seok-youl, the presidential candidate of the People Power Party, showed a "neck-and-neck" pattern. Lee's approval rating declined while Yoon's approval rating rose, narrowing the gap to 1 percentage point. Regarding the unification of opposition candidates, Ahn Cheol-soo, the presidential candidate of the People’s Party, showed an advantage over Yoon, but when limited to respondents who want unification, Yoon actually showed an advantage.
According to the National Barometer Survey (NBS), jointly conducted by four polling agencies including Embrain Public, K-Stat Research, Korea Research, and Hankook Research, a survey was conducted from the 17th to the 19th targeting 1,000 people aged 18 and over nationwide to measure presidential candidate support. Lee recorded 34%, and Yoon recorded 33%. Lee's approval rating dropped by 3 percentage points compared to the previous survey, while Yoon's approval rating rose by 5 percentage points.
Ahn Cheol-soo, the presidential candidate of the People’s Party, dropped by 2 percentage points to 12%, and Sim Sang-jung, the presidential candidate of the Justice Party, remained at 3%, the same as last week's regular survey.
In the presidential election forecast asking who respondents think will become the next president rather than who they support, Lee was at 40%, and Yoon was at 34%. In the previous survey, Lee's chances of winning were 48%, and Yoon's were 27%, a 21 percentage point difference, but in this survey, the gap narrowed to 6 percentage points.
Regarding opposition unification, 46% of respondents said it was necessary, while 42% said it was not. When asked about unification between Yoon and Ahn, 34% said unification should be under Yoon, and 40% said it should be under Ahn. However, among those who believe unification is necessary, 52% said unification should be under Yoon, and 37% said it should be under Ahn.
