The '119 Hero Award' is given by the National Fire Agency to civilians who risk their own safety to protect the lives or property of others at disaster sites such as fires and accidents. Recipients are selected through evaluation of five criteria: ▲job relevance ▲urgency ▲danger ▲causality ▲special circumstances. Since its inception in 2018, 27 'civilian heroes' have been recognized. Since 2021, Gmarket has supported the prize money for the 119 Hero Award recipients through an agreement with the National Fire Agency.
The honor of receiving the third 119 Hero Award of 2021 went to four individuals: Shin Jaebin (42) and Kim Min (21) from Cheongju, Chungbuk, and Lee Yonggeum (50) and Noh Beomtaek (46) from Cheorwon-gun, Gangwon.
Shin Jaebin and Kim Min were recognized for rescuing a man in his 20s who was hanging from the 7th-floor balcony and losing strength, falling, at an apartment fire in Cheongju, Chungbuk, in August last year, using blankets and a mattress. The rescued individual was safely saved with no injuries other than a leg fracture. Lee Yonggeum and Noh Beomtaek discovered three men in their 20s who had fallen into the Hantan River in July last year and immediately jumped into the water, using ropes from the lifesaving box installed on site to safely rescue all three. In particular, Lee Yonggeum actively utilized his experience as a member of the volunteer fire brigade and citizen water rescue team.
Seominseok, Head of Communications at Gmarket, who participated in the award ceremony, said, "I am pleased to personally present the 119 Hero Award to the four heroes who led the rescue of others without hesitation at dangerous disaster sites," and added, "We will continue to actively discover hidden civilian heroes around us and make various efforts to widely publicize their achievements."
