"China, Beijing Olympic Athlete Uniforms Made in Xinjiang"
[Asia Economy Reporter Yujin Cho] On the 12th (local time), the British Telegraph reported that China will make the uniforms for the athletes participating in the Beijing Winter Olympics using cotton produced in Xinjiang.
Chinese sports official Zhang Sichai said, "This is Xinjiang's contribution to the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics," and stated that more than 2,000 sets of uniforms, including ski suits, gloves, hats, and earmuffs made from cotton and camel hair produced in Xinjiang, were delivered to the Olympic organizers.
The Telegraph analyzed that while the Xinjiang issue has led to 'diplomatic boycotts' and various sanctions by Western countries citing human rights abuses, it has simultaneously become a symbol of patriotism in China.
Following boycott declarations against Xinjiang cotton by global apparel companies such as Nike, Burberry, and Adidas, a strong boycott movement also arose within China.
The Xinjiang region, which accounts for 85% of the world's cotton production, is known to have relied on forced labor exploitation of the Uyghur minority.
The Telegraph reported that millions of Uyghurs and other Muslim minorities have been detained in Xinjiang camps, and upon release from the camps, they are put into labor programs and forced to work.
A person who was previously forced into labor claimed to the Telegraph that they were compelled to work 12-hour shifts and pressured to meet enormous production quotas.
