Industrial Accidents in Gyeonggi Region Concentrated in 'Female Retail and Food Services, Male Construction'
[Asia Economy (Suwon) = Reporter Lee Young-gyu] An analysis of industrial accidents in the Gyeonggi region revealed that women are concentrated in retail and food service industries, while men are concentrated in the construction industry.
The Gyeonggi Women's Family Foundation announced on the 13th a report titled "Current Status and Implications of Industrial Accidents among Female Workers: Issue Analysis" containing these findings.
According to the report, among the 27,635 industrial accident victims in Gyeonggi Province in 2020, 78.4% (21,666) were men and 21.6% (5,969) were women.
By industry, men were mostly in construction (30.5%), machinery and metal product manufacturing (17.4%), and retail, food, and lodging (14.2%).
In contrast, women were mostly in retail, food, and lodging (35.4%), healthcare and education (17.5%), and facility management and support services (13.6%).
Regarding the types of accidents, women experienced falls (37.7%), entrapment (12.0%), and occupational diseases (10.0%), while men experienced falls from heights (16.7%), entrapment (15.1%), and falls (13.8%) more frequently.
The Gyeonggi Women's Family Foundation suggested that since there are significant differences in the industries and types of industrial accidents by gender, a detailed gender-based analysis should be conducted on cases where industrial accident compensation claims were made but not recognized, and various safety and health guidelines based on the Industrial Safety and Health Act should be reviewed from a gender-sensitive perspective.

Jung Hyung-ok, senior research fellow at the Gyeonggi Women's Family Foundation, emphasized, "Although there are differences in working environments by gender, in a labor market where occupations are segregated by gender, accidents experienced by women are even less likely to be recognized as occupational accidents. A detailed analysis is required on what types of accidents women apply for industrial accident compensation for, and the reasons why occupational accidents are not recognized."
