Busan Port Authority Adds 'Safety' to Bukhang as Well
Shingamman Pier Container Crane Smart Safety Enhancement Project
[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Lee Seryeong] Busan Port Authority (BPA) has launched a smart safety advancement project for container cranes at the New Gamman Pier in the North Port to ensure the safety of port workers and improve the efficiency of pier operations.
The project targets 5 out of 7 container cranes installed at New Gamman Pier that are owned by BPA, with a total project cost of 4 billion KRW. The authority expects a significant improvement in the safety of container cranes at the North Port, which has lagged somewhat behind Busan New Port.
The main components of the project include the installation of an automated cable reel multi-cargo securing device system to prevent the unwinding of crane power cables, the installation of a main hoist mechanical device monitoring system for control and monitoring of the handling equipment, and drive replacements.
Currently, the North Port cranes lack a device to automatically secure power cables, which poses a risk of cable unwinding and cutting due to wave impact during typhoons or accidents caused by workers manually securing cables and falling.
Unlike the New Port, there is no abnormal symptom monitoring system for the main hoist mechanical devices such as noise, vibration, and heat generation. The authority initiated this project to raise the safety level of North Port equipment to that of the New Port.
The authority has been steadily implementing safety facility reinforcements, such as installing emergency brakes on its own equipment, to prepare for accident risks due to the aging of North Port container cranes.
Based on the results of a detailed safety inspection of its own container cranes conducted last year, the authority decided to actively promote the smart safety advancement project for container cranes at New Gamman Pier this year.
