Operation of Jeonnam Police 'Election Crime Investigation Situation Room' in Preparation for the 20th Presidential Election and the 8th Nationwide Local Elections
Jeonnam 22 Police Stations Establish 24-Hour Election Crime Crackdown System
[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Kim Chunsu] Jeonnam Police Agency announced on the 11th that it will operate an ‘Election Crime Investigation Situation Room’ at 22 police stations in Jeonnam from the 8th of this month until June 1st in preparation for the ‘20th Presidential Election’ and the ‘8th Nationwide Simultaneous Local Elections’ to be held this year.
In particular, with the presidential election just two months away, the Election Crime Investigation Situation Room will establish a 24-hour response system to strengthen crime intelligence collection and respond swiftly and strictly to various illegal activities related to the election.
Jeonnam police will focus on cracking down on the ‘five major election crimes’: ▲bribery, ▲spreading false information, ▲government officials’ involvement in elections, ▲election violence, and ▲illegal group mobilization, and will fulfill the police’s role for a fair election by cooperating organically with related organizations such as the Election Commission and the prosecution.
As of the 5th, Jeonnam police have investigated a total of 43 cases involving 105 people for violations of the Public Official Election Act, among which 12 people were sent to the prosecution.
By each election, 3 cases involving 6 people for the presidential election and 11 cases involving 54 people for the local elections are under investigation; 29 cases involving 45 people have been closed, and 10 cases involving 12 people were sent to the prosecution. By crime type, there were ▲58 people for bribery, ▲14 people for illegal election campaigning, ▲12 people for pre-election campaigning, and 21 people for others.
Going forward, they will do their best to ensure that the election is conducted cleanly and fairly with a strict and neutral attitude.

A Jeonnam police official emphasized, “For a fair election, not only the police’s efforts but also the active reporting and tips from the residents are important,” and urged, “If you become aware of any illegal activities related to the election, please actively report them to 112 or the nearest police station.”
