[Asia Economy Reporter Seongpil Cho] Former professional basketball player Ki Seung-ho (37) of Ulsan Mobis was sentenced to prison in the first trial for assaulting a junior colleague and causing injury during a company dinner.
On the 11th, Judge Yang Hwan-seung of the Seoul Central District Court Criminal Division 3 sentenced Ki to six months in prison for injury charges. However, he was not detained in court to allow an opportunity for victim recovery. The court stated the sentencing reasons, saying, "The victim, an athlete, suffered significant bodily harm and has not forgiven the defendant. Efforts to restore the damage also seem insufficient." The court added, "Considering that the crime was impulsive, the defendant is a first-time offender, is remorseful, and has lost his career and future as a basketball player."
Earlier, Ki was indicted for assaulting junior player Jang Jae-seok (31) on April 26 last year during a company dinner at the team dormitory while intoxicated, causing injuries requiring five weeks of treatment. It was investigated that Ki, angry over the team’s failure to advance to the finals, confronted Jang and swung his fist, saying, "You are also Mobis." Jang, who was hit in the face, was diagnosed with an orbital fracture and other injuries. Although Ki reportedly assaulted other juniors besides Jang, they expressed no desire for punishment, leading to a non-prosecution decision during the police investigation.
