Gwangjin-gu Installs 'Diagonal Crosswalks' at 3 School Zones: Sinyang Elementary, Seongdong Elementary, and Yonggok Elementary
Reducing Pedestrian Traffic Accident Risks, Shortening Pedestrian Waiting Times, and Enhancing Mobility Convenience
[Asia Economy Reporter Jongil Park] Gwangjin-gu (Mayor Kim Seon-gap) has newly installed diagonal crosswalks at three elementary school child protection zones, prioritizing pedestrian convenience and safety.
At four-way intersections where pedestrians must cross two crosswalks, waiting times for pedestrian signals tend to be long, causing anxiety and inconvenience. For children who love to run and play, boredom is doubled. Reflecting these pedestrian concerns and simultaneously satisfying safety and convenience is the diagonal crosswalk.
Last year, the district selected three sites in consultation with Seoul City and the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency: in front of the National Mental Health Center in the Yonggok Elementary School child protection zone, the back gate of Shinyang Elementary School, and the entrance of Seongdong Elementary School. Prioritizing children's safety, the diagonal crosswalk installations were completed in December last year.
Through this, the district added diagonal crosswalks to existing crosswalks at four-way intersections, eliminating the inconvenience of pedestrians having to wait for two pedestrian signals.
Also, pedestrian signals in all directions turn green simultaneously, completely blocking vehicle entry into the intersection, allowing pedestrians to cross safely in any direction at a vehicle-free intersection.
Currently, the district operates a total of 13 diagonal crosswalks, including the three newly added locations and existing ones in front of Seongja Elementary School, Dongja Elementary School, and Shinja Elementary School.
Kim Seon-gap, Mayor of Gwangjin-gu, said, “Diagonal crosswalks are expected to greatly help prevent traffic accidents involving vulnerable road users such as children and the elderly,” and added, “We will continue to strive to create a convenient, people-centered traffic environment.”
