US-Russia Geneva Security Talks Begin... Discussion on Ukraine Situation
[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Hyemin] On the 10th (local time), the United States and Russia began talks in Geneva, Switzerland, to resolve the Ukraine crisis.
The talks, held at the U.S. Mission in Geneva, were attended by delegations led by Wendy Sherman, U.S. Deputy Secretary of State, and Sergey Ryabkov, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister.
The discussions are expected to focus on ways to resolve conflicts surrounding Russia's deployment of large-scale troops near the Ukraine border area and the adoption of security guarantee documents between Russia and the West.
Earlier, on the 15th of last month, Russia delivered two draft documents to the U.S.: a security guarantee treaty between the two countries and an agreement on security measures between Russia and NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organization) member countries.
The documents reportedly include provisions to stop NATO's eastward expansion by accepting additional former Soviet states such as Ukraine as members, and to guarantee that no offensive weapons such as medium- and short-range missiles will be deployed in countries near Russia.
However, since the West, including the United States, has expressed that these demands are unreasonable, the outcome of the talks is difficult to predict.
