[Asia Economy Reporter Lee Gwan-joo] The National Police Agency announced on the 11th that it will operate 'Election Crime Investigation Situation Rooms' at 277 police stations nationwide in preparation for the presidential election in March and the nationwide local elections in June.
The police plan to strengthen the collection of criminal intelligence and respond to various illegal activities related to the elections by establishing a 24-hour response system centered on the investigation situation rooms.
In particular, they will focus on cracking down on the 'five major election crimes': ▲bribery ▲dissemination of false information ▲public officials' involvement in elections ▲election violence ▲illegal mobilization of groups. As of the 10th of this month, the police have investigated 335 cases involving 517 people for violations of the Public Official Election Act and have sent 43 people to the prosecution. By type, there are 287 for dissemination of false information, 115 for bribery, and 52 for preliminary election campaigning.

The National Police Agency urged the public to actively report violations of the Public Official Election Act to 112 or the nearest police station.
