Musical 'Notre-Dame de Paris' French Original, Encore Performance on the 25th of Next Month
The musical "Notre-Dame de Paris," which set an astonishing record of 99% paid occupancy last year at the Sejong Center for the Performing Arts Grand Theater, will present an encore performance starting from the 25th of next month at the Blue Square Shinhan Card Hall in Seoul.
Playing the role of "Quasimodo," the hunchback with an ugly face but a purer heart than anyone else who loves "Esmeralda," are Angelo Del Vecchio, who delivers a deep resonance, and Maximilien Philippe, who was praised for his husky voice and poignant love songs, returning to the stage. The enchanting gypsy woman "Esmeralda," who receives the love of three men, will be passionately portrayed by Elhaida Dani, who has built her own character with a charming mid-low voice, and Jaime Bono, who heralds the birth of a new "Esmeralda."
John Eyzen, who won the hearts of Korean audiences with his stable performance, returns as the singing street minstrel "Gringoire." Flo Carli, who performed at the 20th-anniversary stage in France in 2016, will meet the audience again. The leader of the gypsies, "Clopin," will be played by Jay, who has been consistently loved for his charismatic acting, and Isaac Enzi. The captain of the guards, "Phoebus," who is conflicted between two women, will be alternately portrayed by Flo Carli and John Eyzen. "Fleur de Lys," Phoebus's fianc?e, will be played by Emma Lepine and Jaime Bono on stage.
Considered a masterpiece among the three major French musicals, "Notre-Dame de Paris" is based on Victor Hugo's novel "The Hunchback of Notre-Dame." It is a work where the music of legendary Italian singer and composer Riccardo Cocciante and the beautiful poetic lyrics of playwright Luc Plamondon blend exquisitely. It depicts the impossible love of the ugly hunchback bell-ringer of Notre-Dame Cathedral, Quasimodo, the cathedral's archdeacon Frollo, and the beautiful gypsy woman Esmeralda, loved by the captain of the guards Phoebus. Within this, it portrays the social instability and confusion of the time, conflicts with pagans, unjust penal systems, human desires, and life and death from multiple perspectives, presenting profound themes that transcend eras.
Additionally, it allows audiences to fully experience the essence of a sung-through work, where actors and dancers are separated and the story is told entirely through song without dialogue. Moreover, various genres of high-difficulty choreography such as contemporary dance, ballet, acrobatics, and breakdance offer unique charm. The grand and overwhelming stage, including a massive 30-ton set and a giant bell weighing over 100kg, adds to the spectacle. Translated into nine languages and performed in 23 countries worldwide, it has been seen by over 15 million people, making it a timeless masterpiece that moves everyone's hearts.
