Golden Globe Oh Young-soo: "Felt Like a Decent Guy for the First Time in My Life"
[Asia Economy Reporter Lee Isul] Actor Oh Young-soo shared his thoughts after becoming the first Korean actor to win the Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actor with 'Squid Game'.
On the 10th (Korean time), Oh Young-soo received the Best Supporting Actor award in the TV Drama category at the 79th Golden Globe Awards for the Netflix original series 'Squid Game'.
On the day, Oh Young-soo said through Netflix, "When I heard the news of the award, for the first time in my life, I told myself, 'You are a good guy,'" adding, "Now it’s not 'Our place in the world,' but 'The world within us.'"
He continued, "Carrying the scent of our culture and the deep love for family in my heart, I thank everyone around the world," and wished, "I hope you live a beautiful life."
Oh Young-soo competed against Billy Crudup and Mark Duplass from 'The Morning Show,' Kieran Culkin from 'Succession,' and Brett Goldstein from 'Ted Lasso.' Lee Jung-jae, who was nominated for Best Actor, did not win.
'Squid Game' is a Netflix series depicting a survival game where participants risk their lives to win a prize of 45.6 billion won. Oh Young-soo played the role of Player 1, Oh Il-nam, sparking the 'Kkanbu' craze. This achievement came 58 years after he began acting in 1963 at the Gwangjang Theater Company.
Meanwhile, the Golden Globe Awards ceremony held that day was boycotted by the film and broadcasting industry and was conducted without an audience or broadcast. Last year, controversies arose over the predominantly white membership, leading to accusations of racial discrimination, and issues of opaque financial management surfaced, raising suspicions of corruption. Combined with gender discrimination controversies, major production companies and PR agencies declared their absence.
