Chuncheon City Plans 'Soil Pollution Cleanup' at US Camp Page in March
Completion of Secondary Site Remediation Design Service by April
[Asia Economy Reporter Ra Young-cheol] Chuncheon City plans to carry out soil contamination cleanup at the first site of the former U.S. military base Camp Page as early as March.
According to the city on the 10th, a soil survey conducted from February 23 to May 23 last year on 190,000㎡ within the former Camp Page (the fine dust blocking forest site and natural learning center) revealed a contaminated area of 5,093㎡ and contaminated soil volume of 14,800 tons.
Accordingly, the city plans to proceed with removal and cleanup as early as March and complete the cleanup design service for the second site by April.
Among the 362,000㎡ area of the second site, the contaminated area is 14,747㎡, and the contaminated soil volume is 33,000 tons.
The city intends to calculate the cleanup costs based on the results of the second site cleanup design service and consult with the Ministry of National Defense.

Previously, the city had agreed with the Ministry of National Defense that the investigation costs of 659 million KRW for the first and second sites and the cleanup cost of 3.101 billion KRW for the first site would be borne by the Ministry of National Defense.
