According to KORAIL on the 8th, on the 6th and 7th, KORAIL held emergency safety countermeasure meetings chaired by President Na Hee-seung at the Daejeon headquarters to discuss the KTX derailment accident. They decided to conduct special inspections across all railway sectors including vehicles and facilities, and to establish measures to strengthen safety.
The cause of this accident is currently under investigation by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport’s Aviation and Railway Accident Investigation Board.
Since it will take a considerable amount of time until the investigation results on the accident circumstances and causes are announced, KORAIL decided to proactively implement measures to ensure safety.
First, a special inspection task force (T/F) will be formed to inspect the running gear of all 14 KTX-Sancheon trainsets manufactured during the same period as the accident vehicle.
In addition, emergency safety inspections will be conducted on major facilities such as railway tunnels, bridges, and overhead lines, as well as on vehicles, to reorganize the safety system. Along with this, winter safety management measures to prepare for cold waves and heavy snowfall will also be reviewed.
