Daejeon City Secures 18 Additional COVID-19 Severe Case Beds to Ease Pressure

View original image[Asia Economy (Daejeon) Reporter Jeong Il-woong] Daejeon City is preparing for the increase in confirmed COVID-19 cases by securing additional hospital beds. Recently, due to a rapid surge in confirmed cases, the operation rate of COVID-19 dedicated severe (intensive care unit) beds in Daejeon temporarily reached 100%.
The city announced that starting from the 6th, it will secure and operate 18 additional COVID-19 dedicated severe beds.
The additional beds will be prepared at Chungnam National University Hospital, bringing the total number of severe beds operated in the region to 46.
As of the 6th, there are currently 38 severe beds at Chungnam National University Hospital and 8 at Konyang University Hospital in operation.
Furthermore, the city plans to secure an additional 23 severe beds, 26 semi-severe beds, and 558 moderate beds by the end of next month, increasing the total number of COVID-19 dedicated beds to 909.
Lee Dong-han, Director of the City’s Health and Welfare Bureau, said, “We will continue to expand infectious disease dedicated hospitals to ensure that citizens can safely receive COVID-19 treatment with full effort,” and added, “Along with this, we ask citizens to voluntarily receive additional vaccinations and comply with quarantine guidelines.”
Meanwhile, as of today, a total of 351 COVID-19 dedicated beds are operated in the region, of which 133 are in use. The utilization rate is 38%, leaving 218 beds available for admission.
Previously, the number of confirmed cases in the region increased to 185 on December 7 of last year but decreased to 41 on the 5th of this month.

However, with the recent increase of 36 Omicron cases (mostly from overseas arrivals), the city’s quarantine authorities explained that concerns about the spread of COVID-19 due to the Omicron variant within the region cannot be overlooked.
