Shinan-gun Publishes White Paper to Preserve and Inherit the Value and Culture of Island Cuisine
Published in Both Print and eBook Formats
[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Seo Young-seo] Shinan-gun, Jeollanam-do, has discovered the unique ingredients and numerous island food values of each island and aimed to preserve and inherit them. Since March last year, they have visited residents with island food skills to uncover forgotten island dishes and compiled the standard recipes into the "Shinan-gun Island Food White Paper."
According to the county on the 6th, the island food of Shinan, known as the 1004 Islands, embodies the geographical characteristics of the islands, the unique eating habits of islanders, and their cooking methods.
There is a unique culture of Shinan created by the climate, traditions, and wisdom of life on each island. However, due to changes in dietary habits, the flood of processed foods and imported agricultural products, the construction of bridges connecting islands, and especially the aging population of island residents, the unique culture of island food is at risk of disappearing. At this critical point, Shinan-gun published the Island Food White Paper.
The publication of the Shinan-gun Island Food White Paper aims to develop local dishes made using current regional ingredients and distinctive cooking methods, discover island-specific dishes that have gradually vanished with modernization, preserve the unique island flavors while also appealing to external palates, and develop new dishes based on the island’s unique ingredients and cooking techniques passed down or developed locally.
The main contents of the Shinan-gun Island Food White Paper include detailed information on the types and production periods of representative food ingredients by island region, types of island foods (340 selections), definitions of island food, historical reviews of ingredients, their efficacy, and cooking methods.
The publication of the Island Food White Paper will play an important supporting role in Shinan-gun’s tourism and food industries, serve as promotional material for the industrialization related to island food, and become a valuable asset for Shinan-gun’s gourmet tourism. It will also be a precious resource for preserving the history and culture of island food.
The Shinan-gun Island Food White Paper has been published in both print and electronic book formats. The e-book has been available since the 1st, and the print version will be available for purchase starting on the 15th.
