Wonju City's Population Surpasses 360,000... Growth Rate Slows Down
Increase in New Residents Due to Relocation of Public Institutions to Innovation Cities
[Asia Economy Reporter Ra Young-cheol] The population of Wonju-si, Gangwon-do, exceeded 360,000 as of the end of December last year.
According to the city on the 5th, the population as of December 2021 was 361,065, marking 14 years since it surpassed 300,000 in 2007.
The city analyzed that the factors for population growth were the relocation of public institutions to the innovation city, the creation of corporate cities, and an increase in newcomers due to changes in education and employment sectors.
However, compared to increases of 5,140 in 2019 and 5,160 in 2020, the population grew by only 3,355 in 2021, indicating a slowdown in the growth trend.
A city official stated, "Since establishing a dedicated population policy department in 2017 and enacting the 'Population Policy Support Ordinance,' we have been steadily implementing policies to increase the population."
