[Asia Economy Reporter Park Jong-il] Jungnang-gu (Mayor Ryu Kyung-gi) has removed old and damaged mailboxes from single-family and multi-family houses in the area and installed new mailboxes displaying road name addresses to improve the appearance of alleyways.
The areas where new mailboxes have been installed so far are Muk 2-dong, Sinnae 1-dong, and Myeonmok 4-dong. The district plans to replace mailboxes for about 13,000 single-family and multi-family households throughout the area with a budget of approximately 430 million KRW. Starting with the installation of 665 mailboxes in Muk 2-dong in 2020, last year 250 were installed in Sinnae 1-dong and 800 in Myeonmok 4-dong.
The existing mailboxes were small with narrow slots, making it difficult to insert large mail items, and lacked windows, making it inconvenient to check from outside whether mail had been delivered. The newly installed mailboxes feature a standard design with wide slots and incorporate unique characteristics of Jungnang-gu. They are painted green, the color of the district’s emblem representing the area's nature-friendly image, to prevent discoloration and damage.
Additionally, a rain guard is installed on top of the mailbox to protect the mail, and the front displays the road name address to facilitate mail delivery and address usage.
The district expects that the promotion of road name addresses through these mailboxes will activate the use of road name addresses and ensure accurate mail delivery, thereby resolving residents’ inconveniences. More road name address promotional mailboxes will be installed sequentially this year as well.
Residents have responded positively, saying that replacing old and dirty mailboxes with convenient and neat ones has made the alleyways look cleaner.
Ryu Kyung-gi, Mayor of Jungnang-gu, said, “We hope that the installation of these road name address promotional mailboxes will improve the inconveniences caused by old mailboxes and enhance the urban landscape.”
