[Agyeong Poll] Top Priority for Next President: 'Job Creation and Economic Revitalization'
[Asia Economy Reporter Naju-seok] The public identified ‘job creation and economic revitalization’ as the top priority policy task for the next president.
Asia Economy commissioned Win-Gi Korea Consulting to conduct a public opinion survey from the 28th to 29th of last month targeting 1,009 voters aged 18 and over nationwide (100% mobile phone virtual numbers, telephone interviews). As a result, 35.1% of respondents chose ‘job creation and economic revitalization’ as the top priority task for the next president to be elected on March 9 next year.
Following that, 22.4% selected ‘real estate stabilization and housing issues,’ 11.7% chose ‘overcoming the COVID-19 crisis,’ and 10.5% picked ‘resolving wealth disparity and polarization.’ ‘Constitutional amendment and political reform’ was chosen by 8.1%, ‘responding to low birthrate and aging population’ by 6.3%, ‘North Korean nuclear issues and inter-Korean relations improvement’ by 2.8%, and ‘climate change response and environmental issues’ by 1.9%, ranking relatively lower.
What draws attention is that although ‘job creation and economic revitalization’ was selected as the top priority, there were groups who chose ‘real estate stabilization and housing issues’ as their top priority. By age group, for example, among those in their 30s, 27.7% chose ‘real estate stabilization and housing issues’ as the top priority, which was higher than the 25.1% who chose ‘job creation and economic revitalization.’
Additionally, among voters in the Seoul area, ‘job creation and economic revitalization’ (31.2%) and ‘real estate stabilization and housing issues’ (27.2%) showed little difference. This reflects the interest in real estate issues in Seoul, where real estate prices have sharply risen.
Moreover, the agenda focus varied relatively according to subjective ideological tendencies. Among progressives, ‘resolving wealth disparity and polarization’ was chosen as the top priority issue (15.8%), showing higher interest than the overall average (10.5%). Among moderates, overcoming the COVID-19 crisis (13.2%) was prioritized over the average (11.7%), while conservatives placed a higher priority on ‘job creation and economic revitalization’ (39.4%) compared to the average (35.1%).
