Prosecution Indicts Former Shinhan Card CEO Wi Seong-ho Without Detention for Hiring Corruption... Former HR Manager Also Indicted
[Asia Economy Reporter Choi Seok-jin, Legal Affairs Specialist] The former CEO of Shinhan Card and the HR team leader, who committed hiring irregularities after receiving requests from executives of Shinhan Financial Group affiliates, have been brought to trial.
On the 2nd, the Criminal Division 1 of the Seoul Central District Prosecutors' Office (Chief Prosecutor Lee Seon-hyeok) announced that on the 31st of last month, they indicted former Shinhan Card CEO Wi Seong-ho and former Shinhan Card HR team leader Mr. A, among two others, without detention on charges of obstruction of business.
The prosecution filed a summary indictment with a fine against former Shinhan Card Vice President Mr. B, who was less involved.
According to the prosecution, former CEO Wi and others, from 2016 to 2017, received requests from executives of Shinhan Financial Group affiliates and created a list of eight recommended candidates, managing them separately as recommended personnel, and are accused of ultimately hiring some of them as new employees.
The investigation revealed that they unlawfully passed candidates who did not meet the company's document screening criteria, manipulated interview scores of candidates who failed to meet the passing scores in the first and second interviews, allowing them to pass each stage or be finally accepted.
The investigation into hiring irregularities at Shinhan Financial Group affiliates began in May 2018 when the Financial Supervisory Service detected preferential hiring circumstances at Shinhan Bank, Shinhan Card, Shinhan Capital, and Shinhan Life Insurance, and requested a prosecution investigation.
The Seoul Eastern District Prosecutors' Office, which received the case, indicted Shinhan Financial Group Chairman Cho Yong-byeong without detention in October 2018 regarding the Shinhan Bank irregular hiring allegations. Chairman Cho, who was found guilty in the first trial, was acquitted in the appellate trial in November last year.
