EBS Free Textbooks Support for Housing Benefits and Out-of-School Youth... 'Exploratory Subjects' Also Added
From This Year, 30,000 More Students Eligible for Free Textbooks, Totaling 150,000
Expanded from 9 to 17 Books Including Social Studies, Science, and Career Exploration Electives
Applications Accepted on EBS Website Until February 6 Next Year
[Asia Economy Reporter Han Jinju] Starting this year, recipients of housing benefits and out-of-school youth will also be able to receive EBS high school textbooks free of charge. The range of textbooks will also expand to a total of 17 volumes, including elective subjects in social studies, science, and career exploration.
On the 29th, the Ministry of Education and EBS announced that from the 2022 academic year, free EBS textbooks will be provided to 150,000 students, an increase of 30,000 from last year.
Until now, support was provided only to high school students from households receiving livelihood, medical, and education benefits, but starting next year, in addition to high school students from households receiving livelihood, medical, education, and housing benefits, out-of-school youth such as those preparing for the qualification exam and homeschooling students will also be included in the support target.
The range of free textbooks will also increase. In addition to the existing Korean, Math, English, and Korean History textbooks, textbooks related to elective subjects in social studies, science, and career exploration will be additionally supported. In the first semester, up to 12 volumes of CSAT Special Lectures textbooks can be requested, and in the second semester, up to 5 additional volumes of CSAT Completion textbooks can be requested by specifying elective subjects.
The first round of free textbook applications for the first semester of 2022 will be from December 22 to February 6, 2022. Applications can be made on the EBSi website. The first 10,000 applicants will also receive a weekly desk study planner. The textbooks will be shipped to the address entered during the application on the website.

The Ministry of Education and EBS plan to continue providing free textbooks not only to individually applying students but also to marginalized groups and out-of-school youth by establishing a cooperative system with welfare organizations such as the Community Chest of Korea.
