“Our Child’s Happy First Grade” … Gyeongbuk Office of Education Supports ‘Newbie’ Parents
Online Orientation for Parents of Elementary School Entrants
[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Kim Gwiyeol] The Gyeongbuk Office of Education held an online orientation session for parents of elementary school entrants on the 28th through ‘Matkulmeokkul TV’.
This orientation was organized to resolve parents’ questions about first-grade elementary school life and alleviate their anxieties, helping them prepare for a stable school admission.
The session was divided into three parts. Part 1, ‘I Want to Know,’ provided various information about the first-grade curriculum and school life. An education expert was invited to discuss the mindset parents should have as first-grade parents and ways to communicate with the school.
Part 2, ‘Let’s Prepare,’ reviewed the things parents need to prepare before their child enters elementary school in March next year. Finally, ‘Going to School’ covered the daily routine of a child entering elementary school, broken down by time.
The orientation was scheduled during lunchtime to allow working parents to participate.
A teacher who is a prospective parent with a child about to enter elementary school hosted the session, asking questions from the parents’ perspective, while the first-grade homeroom teacher and education expert answered them.
The first-grade homeroom teacher responded to parents’ real-time questions via comments, resolving their concerns.
The Gyeongbuk Office of Education explained that it is implementing various policies to help first graders adapt well to school life.
They are promoting a play-centered classroom restructuring project to create warm and comfortable classroom environments, allowing first graders to study in cozy spaces that provide psychological stability.
Additionally, they are implementing tailored Hangul responsibility education to ensure students master Hangul by the end of first grade, and a play-class semester system that focuses intensively on play-centered lessons linked with the kindergarten Nuri curriculum during the first semester of first grade.
The play-class semester system avoids excessive dictation and diary writing beyond the first-grade level. Unnecessary assignments unrelated to curriculum operation have been eliminated, which has been well received by parents.
For parents who could not participate in the live broadcast, the Gyeongbuk Office of Education will upload the orientation video on its official YouTube channel, ‘Matkulmeokkul TV.’
They have produced 26,000 copies of a guidebook for parents of elementary school entrants and completed delivery to each school. This guidebook will be distributed to all parents in line with the preliminary gathering dates for all elementary school entrants in the province, scheduled around January 6, 2022.
