Edward Wilson, American Sociobiologist Who Advocated 'Consilience,' Passes Away
[Asia Economy Reporter Donghyun Choi] Edward Wilson, a prominent American sociobiologist who first introduced the concept of 'consilience,' passed away on the 26th (local time). He was 92 years old.
On the 27th (local time), the Edward Wilson Biodiversity Foundation announced on its website that Professor Wilson died the previous day at his home in Burlington, Massachusetts. The exact cause of death has not been disclosed.
He was born in 1929 in Birmingham, Alabama, USA. He earned his bachelor's and master's degrees in biology from the University of Alabama and received his Ph.D. in biology from Harvard University. He then served as a professor at Harvard University for 46 years starting in 1956.

He was the author of Consilience: The Unity of Knowledge, which proposed the integration of humanities, social sciences, and natural sciences, and was a world-renowned scholar in the field of sociobiology. In this book, he first introduced the concept of 'consilience,' which means bringing together different things to create something new. The term 'consilience' is widely known in Korea through the translation by Choi Jaecheon, a former director of the National Institute of Ecology and a student of Professor Wilson.
