Samsung Electronics Participates in Global Consortium 8K Association, Amazon Joins... Accelerating Expansion of 8K Ecosystem
[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Hyewon] Samsung Electronics announced on the 24th that Amazon, one of the world's largest IT companies, has recently joined the global consortium '8K Association,' established to expand the 8K ecosystem.
The 8K Association includes 33 major global companies from various fields such as TV manufacturers like Samsung Electronics, Panasonic, Hisense, and TCL, as well as panel manufacturers, chipset manufacturers, content producers, streaming companies, and equipment providers. In May, Google, which owns the world's largest video platform 'YouTube,' also joined.
Amazon not only sells various video-related products to consumers but also provides its own online video service (OTT), 'Prime Video,' worldwide. Recently, it has strengthened its position in the OTT service market by signing content supply contracts with film production companies such as 'Universal Pictures,' in addition to producing its own original content.
Besides Amazon, 'UL (Underwriters Laboratory),' which develops standards and provides certification services related to product stability, and '4by4,' which possesses 8K video production and upscaling solutions, joined the 8K Association in November and July, respectively.
Recently, manufacturers have also actively utilized the 8K Association certification program, and as of the end of December, the number of products certified by the 8K Association has exceeded 80.
