Up to 55.4% Off When Purchasing Shampoo and Body Wash Refill Stations
Korea Consumer Agency, Survey Results as of October
[Asia Economy Reporter Lim Chunhan] Recently, refill station stores for products such as shampoo and conditioner have been increasing mainly in the Seoul metropolitan area, and it has been found that the prices of refill products are up to 55% cheaper than those of regular stores.
On the 24th, the Korea Consumer Agency surveyed the prices (as of October) of 13 shampoo and body wash products each from LG Household & Health Care, Amorepacific, and Aromatica. The results showed that the average price at refill stations was 40.0% cheaper. This survey compared and analyzed prices by considering that refill station products are sold by gram (g) and regular products by liter (L), treating 100ml and 100g as equivalent units.
For shampoo, the average price of refill station products was 2,531 KRW per 100g, which is 40.0% cheaper than the regular price of the same products sold in general stores (4,220 KRW per 100g). In particular, Amorepacific's 'Mise en sc?ne Perfect Serum Original Shampoo' was 52.9% cheaper at refill stations than regular products. For body wash, the average refill station price was 2,615 KRW per 100g, 47.7% cheaper than the regular price in stores (4,990 KRW per 100g), with some products being up to 55.4% cheaper. However, since regular products may have discounts such as bundle sales, consumers who prioritize price should carefully compare prices.

The price of dedicated containers, necessary to prevent foreign substances from mixing during refill station product purchases or for using exclusive refill machines, ranged from a minimum of 100 KRW to a maximum of 6,500 KRW depending on the company. Among the surveyed companies, Amorepacific requires the use of dedicated containers when using refill stations. However, in this case, affordable containers are also sold together, so the price burden on consumers is not significant.
