Two Former Judges Turned Lawyers Face First Trial for Bail Bribery Request
[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Park Jin-hyung] The first trial was held for two former judges turned lawyers who received bribes from a construction businessman imprisoned under the pretext of bail permission.
Judge Kim Doo-hee of the Gwangju District Court Criminal Division 9 held the first hearing for lawyers Seo (59) and Yoon (55), who were arrested and indicted on charges of violating the Attorney-at-Law Act.
They were charged with receiving a total of 220 million won by demanding expenses from construction businessman A, who was arrested and indicted on charges of interfering with redevelopment project bidding between December 2019 and January 2020, under the pretense of "requesting the trial judge to grant bail."
After handing over the money to them, Mr. A received bail permission from the court. At that time, the case was handled by Judge Jang of the Criminal Division 8, who had previously worked with Lawyer Yoon at the Daejeon District Court.
Lawyer Seo contacted Lawyer Yoon while trying to find someone connected to the trial judge to secure Mr. A's bail release and decided to collude.
It has not yet been revealed whether part of the money they received flowed to Judge Jang (currently a lawyer).
The defense attorneys stated that they would express their opinions on the charges at the next trial as they have not finished reviewing the evidence documents.
The next trial will be held at 10:30 a.m. on January 11 next year.
