14% Decrease in Autumn Cabbage Production Due to High Temperatures and Diseases
Statistics Korea Announces '2021 Autumn Cabbage, Radish, Soybean, Apple, and Pear Production Survey Results'
[Sejong=Asia Economy Reporter Moon Chaeseok] Due to high temperatures and diseases occurring during the cabbage head formation period in September and October, the production volume of autumn cabbage this year decreased by about 14% compared to the previous year.
Statistics Korea announced the results of the 2021 production survey for autumn cabbage, radish, soybeans, apples, and pears on the 22nd, which included this information.
This autumn's cabbage production was 1,147,462 tons (t), down 14.4% from 1,339,742 t the previous year. The cultivation area was 13,345 hectares (ha), narrowing by 3.7% from 13,854 ha the previous year.
The yield per 10 ares (302 pyeong) during the heading period (cabbage head formation period) in September and October was 8,598 kg, a decrease of 11.1% from 9,670 kg the previous year. The average temperature during the heading period was 18.5℃, 1.3℃ higher than 17.2℃ last year. The damage occurrence rate for autumn cabbage based on sample plots also rose by 15.1 percentage points (p) to 43.6% from 28.5% the previous year. Statistics Korea explained, "The occurrence of high temperatures and diseases during the heading period affected the decrease in yield per 10 ares."

Radish production increased by 9.8% to 435,531 t compared to the previous year. Soybean production also rose by 36.9% to 110,781 t. Apple production increased by 22.2% to 515,930 t, and pear production rose by 58.6% to 210,293 t.
