On the 16th, Choi held a press conference at the Gwangju Metropolitan Office of Education briefing room and said, "I am throwing my hat in the ring to make Gwangju the best educational city."
Choi evaluated the current educational administration under Superintendent Jang Hwi-guk of Gwangju, saying, "During the three terms of the directly elected superintendent, the education sector proactively implemented measures such as eradicating bribery and universal educational welfare, achieving many results."
However, he pointed out, "Considering the long period of 11 years, the achievements are too insignificant," adding, "Students' learning capabilities have significantly declined, and personnel management and disciplinary procedures for teachers have shown bias."
Choi said, "My lifelong dream as an educator is to make Gwangju the best educational city in the country," and added, "I will change the world through education and make the future of youth more hopeful."
He also stated, "I will reduce the current free semester system applied to first-year middle school students to a free semester period as soon as possible and conduct career exploration in the third year of middle school. Written exams will be conducted even under the free semester system, but I will innovate the evaluation methods."
Choi presented major pledges including ▲establishing a comprehensive safety education system ▲improving academic achievement ▲building an educational system for the AI era ▲Gwangju-style democratic citizenship education ▲education fostering talent and individuality ▲strengthening emotional education such as the one student one instrument system ▲expanding parental participation in education ▲establishing the Gwangju Education Integration Promotion Group ▲creating a happy educational environment for faculty and staff ▲and setting the direction of Gwangju education through the collective intelligence of the 'Gwangju Education Council.'
Choi has accumulated school administrative experience as dean of the College of Humanities at Chonnam National University, director of academic affairs, and director of the May 18 Research Institute. He has also been actively involved in civil society as the standing representative of the Gwangju Citizens' Organizations Council, chairman of the public discussion committee for Gwangju Urban Railway Line 2, and co-chairman of the National Professors' Council for Democratization (Minkyo-hyeop).
