Still in 'Jiok' with Jcontentree... Will OTT Content Lead the Rebound?
Jcontentree Stock Quiet Amid OTT Poor Performance... Rises Over 2% on the Day
'Snowdrop' Scheduled to Premiere on Disney+ on the 18th
[Asia Economy Reporter Gong Byung-sun] J Contentree is still trapped in 'Hell'. The stock price direction is expected to be determined by the first original content on Disney's upcoming online video service (OTT) 'Disney Plus' (Disney+). Original content refers to videos exclusively released on the respective OTT platform.
According to the Korea Exchange on the 15th, J Contentree's stock price fell 29.90% since the release of the Netflix content 'Hell' on the 19th of last month. Although it surged to 85,900 KRW intraday on the 22nd of last month, it has hardly risen above the 50,000 KRW level since the sharp drop. However, as of 9:43 AM on the same day, J Contentree recorded 51,900 KRW, rebounding 2.98% (1,500 KRW) compared to the previous day.
This year, J Contentree has been more shaken by its performance on OTT platforms than in theaters. According to OTT ranking aggregation site FlixPatrol, 'Hell' ranked first in Netflix content rankings for 10 consecutive days from the 22nd of last month to the 1st of this month but interest rapidly declined afterward. As of the previous day, it still held 5th place in content rankings, showing a trend compared to 'Squid Game,' which was nominated for the US Golden Globe. 'Hell' ranked only 20th the day before. On the other hand, the influence of theater audience numbers was not significant. After the implementation of With Corona (gradual daily recovery) last month, Megabox's audience increased by 81% compared to the same month last year, but the stock price fell 28.57% throughout November.
Another negative factor for J Contentree is that the benefits from the other OTT, Disney+, are not as large as expected. J Contentree quickly established a cooperative relationship by supplying 14 previously aired dramas to Disney+, which was launched on the 12th of last month. However, according to the mobile data platform Mobile Index, as of the 11th of this month, Disney+'s application user ranking remained at 175th, failing to keep pace with Netflix. On the same day, Netflix ranked 22nd.

The stock price is expected to move depending on the performance of content to be released on OTT platforms in the future. Attention is focused on 'Snowdrop,' an original content produced by J Contentree for Disney+, which will be released on the 18th. As Disney+'s first original content, the better the performance, the more it is expected to boost its popularity. Oh Tae-wan, a researcher at Korea Investment & Securities, explained, "If promising works such as 'Now, We Are Breaking Up' are released following the initial hit 'Hell' on Netflix, J Contentree's production capabilities can be recognized."
