Magnitude 4.9 Earthquake Near Jeju Island... Reports of Shaking Continue in Gwangju and Jeonnam
[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters, Reporter Yoon Jamin] At around 5:19 PM on the 14th, a magnitude 4.9 earthquake occurred at a depth of 17 km in the sea area 41 km southwest of Seogwipo City, Jeju (latitude: 33.09 N, longitude: 126.16 E), prompting multiple reports of tremors felt in the Gwangju and Jeonnam regions.
According to the Gwangju and Jeonnam Fire Headquarters, as of 5:40 PM, about 20 minutes after the earthquake, a total of 58 reports (36 in Jeonnam and 22 in Gwangju) were received regarding shaking of houses and other structures.
Reports of shaking lights, refrigerators, and air conditioners continue to be received, but no damage reports have been confirmed so far.
The Korea Meteorological Administration initially announced the earthquake magnitude as 5.3, based on an automatic analysis using the faster-moving P-wave to quickly alert the public through an early warning. However, after manual analysis, the magnitude was revised downward to 4.9.
