China's Huawei Selected as 'Top Patent Applicant' for Two Consecutive Years
UK Capital On Tap Announces 9,739 Patent Applications... Ranked No.1 in AR and VR
[Asia Economy Reporter Eunmo Koo] Huawei has been selected as the most innovative tech company with the highest number of patent applications worldwide this year, following last year.
On the 14th, UK business credit card company Capital on Tap announced that Huawei filed the most patents globally this year with 9,739 applications, ranking first for two consecutive years in the 'World's Most Innovative Tech Companies' survey.
Huawei filed numerous patents in various advanced technology fields such as Augmented Reality (AR), Virtual Reality (VR), 5G, and the Internet of Things (IoT). In particular, Huawei filed the highest number of patents worldwide in the AR and VR fields with 3,893 applications over the past year, and filed 4,723 patents (2nd place) in the 5G field.
As of the end of last year, Huawei holds more than 40,000 family patents worldwide. It also owns over 100,000 valid patents derived from these family patents. This is interpreted as a result of Huawei investing more than 15% of its annual revenue in research and development (R&D) in recent years. Last year, Huawei invested approximately 26 trillion KRW (141.9 billion yuan) in R&D and ranked 3rd in the 2020 Industrial R&D rankings announced by the European Union. Over the past 10 years, Huawei has invested a total of about 129 trillion KRW (700 billion yuan) in R&D.
Ding Zhenxin, Head of Huawei’s Intellectual Property Division, said at the 'IP Protection, Driving Innovation' forum held in March at Huawei’s headquarters in Shenzhen, China, "Innovation has been at the core of our business since Huawei’s establishment," adding, "Huawei’s success is the result of long-term investment in innovation and R&D."
