'2025 World Archery Championships' to be Held in Gwangju
Confirmed as Host City Over Madrid, Spain
Also Hosting the 2022 Hyundai Archery World Cup
[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Yoon Jamin] Gwangju City has succeeded in hosting the ‘2025 World Archery Championships’ for the first time in 16 years.
Gwangju Metropolitan City announced on the 6th that it was selected as the host city with overwhelming support, beating Madrid, the capital of Spain.
Additionally, the 2022 Hyundai Archery World Cup, originally scheduled to be held in Shanghai, China, was finally decided to be held in our Gwangju.
The World Archery Championships, boasting a 90-year history, is the largest tournament in the world with over 1,100 participants from about 90 countries.
The tournament, held every two years rotating continents, was previously hosted in South Korea in 1985 in Seoul and in 2009 in Ulsan.
Gwangju City launched a bidding committee last August and emphasized its experience hosting the ‘2015 Summer Universiade’ and the ‘2019 World Swimming Championships’ to focus on securing this tournament.
They also highlighted the world-class human resources, having produced six Olympic gold medalists in archery, and excellent international-standard facilities such as the Gwangju International Archery Field.
Furthermore, athletes Ki Bo-bae and An San also supported the effort as promotional ambassadors.

Lee Yong-seop, Mayor of Gwangju, said, “We will leverage the valuable experience of successfully hosting mega international sports events such as the 2015 Gwangju Summer Universiade and the 2019 Gwangju World Swimming Championships to make this tournament more successful than any before.” He added, “We will maintain close cooperation with the central government, the World Archery Federation, and the Korea Archery Association, and prepare without any setbacks together with our citizens.”
