Seongnam City Supports 'Injury Insurance' for Platform Workers in Delivery, Substitute Driving, and Quick Service
[Asia Economy (Seongnam) = Reporter Lee Young-gyu] Seongnam City in Gyeonggi Province will support the enrollment of more than 5,000 platform workers in three occupations?delivery, designated driver, and quick service?in accident insurance.
As of last September, there were 2,187 delivery workers aged 16 or older (the minimum age to obtain a motorcycle license) in the Seongnam area, 1,975 designated drivers, and 867 quick service workers.
The city plans to sign a group accident insurance contract (24.6 million KRW annually) next month, and platform workers in these three occupations will be automatically enrolled in the insurance.
Platform workers will receive insurance payments through the insurance company in case of injury.
The accident insurance coverage includes 25 million KRW for accidental death and permanent disability, 1 million KRW consolation payment for mental illness, 200,000 KRW for burn diagnosis and surgery, and 150,000 KRW for fracture diagnosis and surgery.

A city official explained, "Seongnam City is the first nationwide to support accident insurance enrollment for platform workers in the three occupations such as delivery workers," adding, "We plan to first support these three high-risk occupations and then decide whether to expand the coverage."
