[Asia Economy Reporter Na Ye-eun] A man in his 50s who collapsed while riding a city bus in Gyeongju, Gyeongbuk, was saved by cardiopulmonary resuscitation performed by the bus driver and other passengers.
According to Gyeongju City on the 24th, at around 11:33 a.m. on the 23rd, citizen Ahn (52) suddenly lost consciousness and collapsed with a "thud" sound on bus number 51 running from Hwangseong-dong to Yonggang-dong in Gyeongju.
Passengers who witnessed this immediately laid Ahn flat to secure his airway while supporting his neck and massaging his hands, arms, and legs. The bus driver, Kim Su-chan (62), stopped the bus and started CPR just 18 seconds after Ahn collapsed.
During this process, another passenger called 119 to report the bus location and Ahn's condition, and fortunately, Ahn regained consciousness in the meantime. Afterwards, the 119 emergency team arrived and safely transported him to the hospital, where he stabilized.
The tense scene at the time was fully captured on the bus’s closed-circuit television (CCTV).
Driver Kim Su-chan said, "I judged it was an emergency because the collapsed passenger was not breathing and instinctively performed CPR," adding, "The monthly CPR and safety training provided by the company was a great help."
