Pukyong National University Wins Overall Championship in Autonomous Boat Competition for 2 Consecutive Years
The PASS team and BASS team from the Department of Naval Architecture and Ocean Systems Engineering at Pukyong National University, who won awards at the Autonomous Navigation Boat Competition, are taking a commemorative photo with President Jang Young-su and Professor Park Jong-yong.

The Pukyong National University PASS team received a total of five awards at this competition, including the Advanced Convergence Technology Award from the Minister of Trade, Industry and Energy, securing the overall championship for two years in a row.
KABOAT 2021 is a competition aimed at disseminating government R&D achievements for fostering the advanced marine shipbuilding industry, revitalizing university research, nurturing talent, and discovering cutting-edge technologies in the marine shipbuilding field.
Participants designed and manufactured autonomous navigation boats weighing less than 100kg, competing in four categories?remote control, autopilot, autonomous navigation, and docking?in large water tanks.
The Pukyong National University PASS team equipped their boats with processors such as Jetson Xavier and Raspberry Pi/Arduino, and sensors including GPS, IMU, LiDAR, and cameras, achieving excellent results in all categories through stable algorithms and system configurations.
Alongside the PASS team, the BASS team from the Department of Naval Architecture and Ocean Systems Engineering at Pukyong National University also won first place in two categories?autonomous navigation and docking?and received four awards including the Industrial Technology Award from the Korean Society of Naval Architects and Ocean Engineers.
Professor Park Jong-yong, the supervising professor, stated, “We plan to enhance the capabilities of graduate and undergraduate students related to autonomous ships and focus on developing systems that can accelerate the autonomous navigation of actual ships.”

The competition was hosted by Gyeongsangnam-do and Changwon City, and organized by the Gyeongnam Robot Land Foundation and the Korean Society of Naval Architects and Ocean Engineers, recently held at the Robot Land Convention Center in Masan, Gyeongnam.
