SKT Spreads Consensus to Reduce Single-Use Plastic Cups
'Habit Eco Alliance' Holds Agreement Ceremony with 24 New Member Companies... Expands to Total of 47 Members
[Asia Economy Reporter Seulgina Jo] The campaign to reduce the use of disposable plastic cups by promoting the use of reusable cups is expanding nationwide.
SK Telecom and 24 organizations and companies held a signing ceremony for new member companies of the ‘ha:bit eco alliance’ at the SK-T Tower in Euljiro, Seoul, to lead the reduction of disposable plastic cup usage, and pledged to expand the initiative nationwide on the 24th.
The ‘ha:bit eco alliance’ is a public-private coalition formed with the purpose of solving plastic issues by building a resource circulation ecosystem for the production, provision, collection, and recycling of reusable cups using ICT solutions. At the end of 2020, 23 organizations and companies including the Ministry of Environment, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Seoul Metropolitan Government, Suwon City, SK Telecom, KB Financial Group, Taekwang Group, Starbucks Korea, and Dalkom participated. With the addition of new members this time, the total number has increased to 47 organizations and companies.
The event was conducted in an ‘eco-friendly’ manner, providing beverages using reusable cups to attendees and using banners made by PLA Korea, a member company, which processed yarn extracted from plant-based biodegradable materials. Additionally, eco-friendly products from member companies such as PLA Korea (biodegradable material products), Revelop (plastic upcycled products), and Dr. Noah (bamboo toothbrushes, etc.) were exhibited.
The ‘ha:bit eco alliance’ successfully launched the ‘Eco Jeju Project’ this year, which uses reusable cups at Starbucks stores in the Jeju region. It plans to expand to all 23 Starbucks stores in Jeju by December. In Seoul, a ‘reusable cup pilot project’ is underway centered around Starbucks and Dalkom, with the goal of expanding partnerships to more than 600 cafes in Seoul in 2022.
