Russia Transfers Over 200 More Nationals and Others from Afghanistan
[Asia Economy Reporter Yujin Cho] Russia has evacuated additional nationals staying in Afghanistan using military transport aircraft.
On the 19th (local time), the Russian Ministry of Defense announced that three Ilyushin (IL)-76 military transport planes that departed from Kabul, Afghanistan the previous evening arrived at Moscow's Chkalovsky military airfield that morning.
A total of 205 nationals from five countries?Russia, Armenia, Belarus, Ukraine, and Afghanistan?arrived in Russia using these transport planes. They are Russian and former Soviet Union nationals who wished to leave Afghanistan. The Afghans are reported to hold Russian citizenship.
This transport operation, carried out under the direction of President Vladimir Putin, was led by Defense Minister Sergey Shoigu.
Earlier, Russia conducted its first evacuation operation on August 25, ten days after the Islamic extremist militant group Taliban took control of Kabul.
