Hyundai Motor to Expand Hydrogen Fuel Cells... President Park Jeong-guk Oversees Overall Operations (Comprehensive)
Hyundai Motor Elevates Hydrogen Fuel Cell Business to President-Level Organization
[Asia Economy Reporter Changhwan Lee] Hyundai Motor Group is expanding and reorganizing its hydrogen fuel cell division, which Chairman Chung Euisun has identified as the next-generation future growth engine.
On the 19th, Hyundai Motor Group announced that it will establish a new Hydrogen Fuel Cell Division through organizational restructuring and appoint Park Jung-guk, Vice President (President) of Hyundai Motor's Research and Development Headquarters, as the overall head.
President Park will lead Hyundai Motor Group's hydrogen fuel cell development and business directly as the commander of fuel cell development. He is an R&D expert and was the first engineer to serve as president of Hyundai Mobis.
With President Park's appointment, Hyundai Motor Group's hydrogen fuel cell business has been elevated from a vice president-level to a president-level organization. Chairman Chung announced at the 'Hydrogen Wave' event held last September that the era of hydrogen popularization will begin by 2040.
To this end, Hyundai Motor is expanding its hydrogen-related organization and business. In 2023, it will launch the 3rd generation hydrogen fuel cell, which will significantly reduce costs and improve efficiency compared to the currently used 2nd generation product. By 2028, all commercial vehicles will be converted to hydrogen vehicles.
The existing fuel cell business division will be separated and expanded into development and business organizations.
The Hydrogen Fuel Cell Development Center, responsible for development, will focus on hydrogen fuel cell technology development, advancement of development systems, cost reduction, and performance assurance. The Hydrogen Fuel Cell Development Center will be led by Kim Sehun, current Vice President and Head of Hyundai Motor's Fuel Cell Business Division, who will dedicate himself to development.
The business organization, the Hydrogen Fuel Cell Business Division, plans to strengthen business strategy and operations, as well as innovative production technology development and quality assurance systems.
The Hydrogen Fuel Cell Business Division will be led by Executive Director Lim Taewon of Hyundai Motor. Executive Director Lim is a full member of the Korean Academy of Engineering and a technical expert in materials and fuel cells. He has an outstanding network in academia and industry both domestically and internationally and is recognized for successfully leading the development of the Tucson fuel cell vehicle.
Hyundai Motor Group explained that the expansion and reorganization of the organizational structure is intended to quickly overcome technical challenges and other issues discovered during the mid-term review of research outcomes and to redefine the research and development schedule and direction.
