On the 19th, the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport announced that the groundbreaking ceremony for the main construction of the Chinchero New Airport project in Peru, built by our country under the Korea-Peru government-to-government (G2G) contract, will be held at midnight Korean time on the 20th (10 a.m. local time on the 19th).
The Chinchero New Airport project is a large-scale infrastructure construction project to build the gateway airport to Machu Picchu, a city of the Inca civilization and a world-renowned tourist destination.
In June 2019, our government actively pursued the project issued by the Peruvian government through the G2G method, ultimately winning the contract over Spain, Canada, Turkey, and others.
In particular, this year, Hyundai Engineering & Construction achieved the remarkable feat of consecutively winning the site preparation work contract in March and the main construction contract in July. The site preparation work, valued at approximately 160 billion KRW, was awarded to a consortium of Hyundai Engineering & Construction (55%) and Peru's HV Contratistas (45%).
The main construction, worth 540 billion KRW, which includes building the runway, terminal, apron, and parking lot, was entrusted to a consortium comprising Hyundai Engineering & Construction (35%), HV (22.5%), Mexico's ICA (22.5%), and China's Sinohydro (20%).

PMO refers to a project type that comprehensively manages the entire project on behalf of the client, including design review, selection of contractors and supervisors, technical support, and commissioning.
The groundbreaking ceremony, held at the Cusco provincial government office in Peru, is jointly hosted by the PMO operator and the main construction contractor of the Chinchero New Airport project. The PMO operator is the consortium of Korea Airports Corporation, Dohwa, Gunwon, and HanmiGlobal.
The Chinchero New Airport aims to open in 2025. It is planned to be constructed as an airport capable of handling approximately 5 million passengers annually. The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport explained, "Participation in this project is expected to be an opportunity to enhance Korea's competitiveness in securing orders in the Latin American market, where demand for construction and infrastructure is high."
The groundbreaking ceremony will be attended by Ju Jong-wan, Director General of Airport Policy at the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, as well as representatives from the Korea Trade-Investment Promotion Agency (KOTRA), the Embassy of the Republic of Korea in Peru, Korea Airports Corporation, Hyundai Engineering & Construction, and Dohwa Engineering. From Peru, President Pedro Castillo, the Minister of Transport and Communications, and the Governor of Cusco Province are expected to attend.
