View original image[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters, Reporter Cho Hyung-joo] GIST (Gwangju Institute of Science and Technology, President Kim Ki-seon) celebrated its 28th anniversary on the 16th with a commemorative ceremony held at Oryong Hall attended by more than 80 people, including key officials, faculty, and students, the institute announced on the 17th.
This year’s event, like last year, was conducted on a small scale focusing on major awardees and was broadcast live online to prevent the spread of COVID-19. It provided a time to share GIST’s future vision and to encourage and thank the members who have devoted themselves to the development of the institution in various fields.
President Kim Ki-seon emphasized in his commemorative speech, "Since its opening, GIST has swiftly responded to various demands from the region and the nation. Centered on the AI Graduate School, Energy Convergence Graduate School, and Artificial Intelligence Research Institute, it plays a key role in research and human resource development in the field of artificial intelligence, striving to revitalize the regional economy and create a successful model for the Gwangju AI clustering."
He also stated, "Going forward, GIST will focus more on nurturing convergence science talents and economic innovation through startups, creating jobs, becoming a source of pride for the region, a public institution that works with the people, and a trusted GIST by always communicating and making efforts."
Meanwhile, GIST was established in 1993 with the purpose of nurturing high-level science and technology talents, conducting basic and applied research for national R&D projects, and revitalizing the Gwangju Advanced Science Industrial Complex. It started with master’s and doctoral graduate programs in 1995 and opened undergraduate programs in 2010, establishing itself as a successful model of innovative, elite science and engineering education.
GIST is actively contributing to the creation of an AI-centered industrial convergence complex and is committed to regional innovation, job creation, and training of high-level AI talents through artificial intelligence.
