[Asia Economy Reporter Jong-il Park] Woo Hyung-chan, Chair of the Transportation Committee of the Seoul Metropolitan Council (Democratic Party, Yangcheon 3), expressed strong determination to resolve the seven major transportation issues in Yangcheon-gu during the administrative audit of the Seoul Metropolitan Government’s Urban Transportation Office on the 4th.
The seven major transportation issues in Yangcheon-gu identified by Chair Woo are ▲ Mokdong Line ▲ Gangbuk Transversal Line ▲ Hongdae~Daejang Line ▲ Commencement of construction of the Western Truck Terminal ▲ Alleviation of traffic congestion at the Sinwol-Yeoui underpass ▲ Relocation of Sinjeong Vehicle Depot ▲ Relocation of Gimpo Airport.
Regarding the construction of the urban railway network including the Mokdong Line, Gangbuk Transversal Line, and Hongdae~Daejang Line, Transportation Committee Chair Woo requested the Director of the Urban Transportation Office and the Head of the Logistics Policy Division to actively consult with the central government agencies such as the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport and the Ministry of Economy and Finance to ensure the projects proceed promptly.
In terms of securing the right to know for local residents about the development of the Western Truck Terminal Urban High-tech Logistics Complex, Chair Woo urged the Director of the Urban Transportation Office and the Head of the Logistics Policy Division to concentrate Seoul’s administrative capabilities to commence construction in 2024.
Regarding the traffic congestion issue at the Sinwol-Yeoui underpass, the nation’s first road exclusively for small vehicles, Chair Woo visited the site on the 29th of last month and during the administrative audit, he urged the Director of the Urban Transportation Office and the Head of the Traffic Operations Division to swiftly and actively prepare traffic flow measures to alleviate congestion at the underpass exit.
Furthermore, to resolve the long-standing issue of relocating the Sinjeong Vehicle Depot, a long-cherished wish of Yangcheon-gu residents, Chair Woo requested the Seoul Urban Transportation Office to establish long-term and systematic plans and actively consult with surrounding cities such as Incheon, Gimpo, and Gyeonggi Province.
Finally, Chair Woo formed the ‘Incheon-Gimpo Airport Integrated Metropolitan Area Promotion Team,’ composed of civic groups from Seoul, Incheon, and Gyeonggi regions and local council members from each area, and held a press conference at the Seoul Metropolitan Council on the 28th of last month.

At the event, Chair Woo emphasized, “The relocation and integration of Gimpo International Airport and Incheon International Airport is the solution to enhance South Korea’s competitiveness and redraw the map of the metropolitan area,” adding, “The Incheon-Gimpo Airport Integrated Metropolitan Area Promotion Team will devote all efforts to the metropolitan area’s development and citizens’ rights, including a one million citizen signature campaign for the integration and consolidation of Incheon and Gimpo Airports.”
