ICT Colloquium 2021... Minister Im Hye-sook Announces "Youth Support Measures to be Released in December"
[Asia Economy Reporter Seulgina Jo] Minister Lim Hye-sook of the Ministry of Science and ICT announced on the 16th that "a youth support policy for the digital transformation era will be prepared and announced in December."
Minister Lim made these remarks while attending the ‘ICT Colloquium 2021’ held at El Tower in Yangjae, Seoul. ICT Colloquium 2021 is a gathering where graduate students nationwide in the ICT field share research and educational achievements, with 770 professors from 32 universities (60 centers) and over 3,100 students participating both online and offline.
At the opening ceremony, awards were presented to excellent teams (10 teams) of the ‘ICT Challenge 2021’ competition, ‘Student Creative Autonomous Research Projects’ (10 projects), and outstanding research centers (6 centers). Among the 79 teams and 233 graduate students who participated in this competition, Chungbuk National University’s ‘Beot Following Team’ showcased an AI-based autonomous logistics cart and won first place (Minister of Science and ICT Award, prize money of 12 million KRW).
In the ‘Student Creative Autonomous Research Projects’ category, where student researchers independently select and conduct research topics, Sungkyunkwan University’s ‘Super Sapiens Research Institute’ won first place (Minister of Science and ICT Award) with their service that recognizes sign language for the hearing impaired using a skin-attached wireless device. Additionally, six university research centers, including Sogang University’s Intelligent Blockchain Research Center, were recognized for their outstanding achievements and received awards from the Minister of Science and ICT and the President of the Institute for Information & Communications Technology Planning & Evaluation.
During the ‘Dialogue with Digital Talents’ chaired by Minister Lim, students continuing their startups and research, senior entrepreneurs, and supervising professors attended to discuss ways to support the challenges and growth of young digital talents.
Minister Lim stated, “Young digital talents who are nurturing their dreams through studies, research, and entrepreneurial activities are the protagonists who will lead Korea’s new leap forward after COVID-19,” and added, “We will incorporate the diverse voices of the youth met today to prepare and announce in December a youth support policy for the digital transformation era that enables ‘more challenges, greater growth, and leaps into a broader world.’”
