Jeju Police Hold Meeting with Related Agencies to Ensure Safety in Child Protection Zones
[Jeju=Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Hwang Jeongpil] Jeju Police Agency (Chief Kang Hwangsu) announced on the 16th that it held a 'Meeting with Related Organizations to Ensure Safety in Child Protection Zones' on the 15th at the 2nd-floor conference room of the Jeju Police Agency.
About 20 officials from related organizations including Jeju Province, Jeju Provincial Office of Education, administrative cities, autonomous police corps, Road Traffic Authority, Korea Transportation Safety Authority, Green Mothers' Association, and Model Drivers' Association attended the meeting.
They also decided to minimize inconvenience and complaints from residents by posting banners announcing the complete prohibition of parking and stopping in child protection zones and promoting through various methods such as TBN traffic broadcasting, electronic display boards, and home correspondence letters.
To prevent child traffic accidents caused by obstructed drivers' visibility due to illegal parking and stopping vehicles, joint crackdowns on illegal parking vehicles by related organizations will be strengthened.
Intensive enforcement activities will be conducted during school commuting hours from 7:30 a.m. to 9 a.m. and after 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.
In particular, schools located near residential areas, where illegal parking around school fences or back gates makes two-way traffic difficult and increases the risk of child traffic accidents, will be subject to intensified crackdowns.
To protect children boarding and alighting from school buses, the requirements for children's school buses will be inspected, and special protection violations such as ▲ obligation to slow down after confirming safety when passing by a stopped children's school bus ▲ prohibition of overtaking children's school buses will also be enforced.
The Jeju Police Agency and the autonomous police corps will collaborate to select schools with high accident risks during commuting hours, assign dedicated traffic police officers, and cooperate with the Green Mothers' Association and Model Drivers' Association to conduct safety activities such as traffic guidance.
Since the implementation of the so-called Min-sik Act (March 25, 2020), traffic safety in child protection zones has been continuously strengthened.
Especially since May 11, the fines and penalties for parking violations in child protection zones have been increased to three times those on general roads.
Accordingly, for passenger cars (including cargo trucks under 4 tons), fines and penalties of 120,000 KRW are imposed, and for vans, fines and penalties of 130,000 KRW are imposed.
A Jeju Police official said, “Please do not forget that children are moving red traffic lights and that child protection zones are absolute traffic safety secured areas. Even if there is some inconvenience due to the revised law, we ask for the interest and active cooperation of residents, including parents, to create a safe commuting path for children.”
