Audi and BMW Officially Deny McLaren Acquisition Rumors
[Asia Economy Reporter Yujin Cho] Audi and BMW have officially denied media reports that they are pursuing the acquisition of British supercar manufacturer McLaren.
On the 15th (local time), McLaren stated in a press release, "There is no change in McLaren's ownership structure," and added, "The media reports that Audi is pursuing the acquisition of its F1 business are completely inaccurate."
They also explained that McLaren's technology strategy includes cooperation with various global automakers in multiple fields.
Earlier, BMW also stated in an official position, "The media reports that BMW is interested in acquiring McLaren's supercar business are unfounded."
BMW supplies plug-in hybrid technology to McLaren's new supercar 'Artura' and is jointly developing batteries.
Headquartered in Woking, UK, McLaren faced significant financial difficulties due to a decline in sales following the COVID-19 pandemic, leading them to sell their headquarters building and attract funding from the sovereign wealth funds of Saudi Arabia and Bahrain to alleviate financial strain.
In December last year, McLaren sold a 15% stake in its racing division to the US investment group MSP Sports Capital and agreed to sell an additional 18% stake by the end of next year. In this deal, McLaren's racing division was valued at ?560 million.
