View original image[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Heung-soon] The number of new COVID-19 cases increased by nearly 300 by 6 p.m. on the 15th compared to the previous day.
According to the quarantine authorities, Seoul city, and other local governments, a total of 1,419 new confirmed COVID-19 cases were reported nationwide from midnight to 6 p.m. on that day. This is 270 more than the 1,149 cases confirmed at the same time the previous day, and 101 more than the 1,318 cases recorded at the same time one week earlier on the 8th.
This total is the sum of 16 out of 17 metropolitan cities and provinces, excluding Busan, which does not release interim confirmed case counts. Among the regions reporting cases that day, 1,144 cases (80.6%) were from the Seoul metropolitan area, and 275 cases (19.4%) were from non-metropolitan areas.
By region, the numbers are as follows: Seoul 645, Gyeonggi 385, Incheon 114, Jeju 43, Gangwon, Chungnam, and Gyeongnam each 37, Daegu 32, Daejeon 22, Chungbuk and Jeonbuk each 18, Jeonnam 11, Gwangju 10, Gyeongbuk 8, and Ulsan and Sejong each 1.

Since there is still time until midnight when the count is finalized, the number of new confirmed cases announced at 0:00 on the 16th is expected to increase further. The previous day saw an increase of 857 cases from the 6 p.m. count, closing at a final total of 2,006 cases.
