Thunberg Criticizes Climate Agreement: "Summary: This and That"
[Asia Economy Reporter Lim Chun-han] Greta Thunberg (18), a Swedish teenage environmental activist, harshly criticized the 26th United Nations Climate Change Conference of the Parties (COP26), which concluded on the 13th (local time), saying, "Summary: Blah, blah, blah."
On the same day, Thunberg posted this one-line review on her Twitter and wrote, "The real work continues outside the conference hall. We will never, ever give up."
On the 7th, Thunberg reshared her tweet. At that time, she stated, "Without immediate, bold, and unprecedented annual emission reductions, responding to the climate crisis is a failure," and argued that phrases like "'a small step but in the right direction,' 'some progress has been made,' and 'slow success' are equivalent to defeat."
At COP26, which concluded that day, over 200 participating countries adopted the "Glasgow Climate Pact," which includes phasing down coal power and reviewing each country's greenhouse gas reduction targets next year to keep global temperature rise within 1.5 degrees Celsius.
Environmental organizations criticize the pact as insufficient to curb climate change. Amid protests from major greenhouse gas emitting countries, the draft agreement's wording on coal power was lowered from "phase out" to "phase down."

Jennifer Morgan, Secretary General of Greenpeace, said about the conference results, "Although some phrases could be amended, the important signal of COP26 cannot be changed. The 'era of coal' is coming to an end," adding, "If you are a coal company executive, you probably won't be pleased with the outcome of COP26."
