Yongsan-gu Recycling Sorting Facility Improvement Construction Completed... Daily Processing Capacity Increased by 15 Tons
Total Project Cost of 1.18 Billion Won Invested to Increase Daily Processing Capacity by 15 Tons to 65 Tons... Exterior Wall Height Raised (3m→5m) with Soundproof Wall Replacement to Reduce Resident Discomfort... Internal Paneling of Sorting Line, New Cafeteria, Lounge, and Restrooms to Improve Working Conditions
[Asia Economy Reporter Jongil Park] Yongsan-gu (Mayor Seong Jang-hyun) has completed the facility improvement construction of the recycling sorting center (100-38 Wonhyo-ro 4-ga).
As a result, the daily recycling processing capacity in the area is expected to increase by 30%, from 50 tons to 65 tons.
The recycling sorting center facility improvement was a campaign pledge during the 7th local government term. The budget was secured in December 2019, construction began in 2020, and the work was completed this October.
With the facility improvement, the sorting center area increased by 9.3%, from 1,036㎡ to 1,132㎡. Along with the increase in daily processing capacity, the power distribution panel capacity was increased by 200kw to 500kw, and a water tank room was also added.
In December, a PET compressor and a reducer will be additionally installed. An EPR compressor will be relocated and installed in the expanded workspace to separately process waste vinyl.
The aesthetics were also improved. The fence height was raised by 2 meters, from 3m to 5m, to block external views, prevent waste scattering, and reduce odors, minimizing inconvenience to residents.
New panels were installed inside the sorting line to improve heating and cooling efficiency. The addition of a restroom, break room, and cafeteria greatly enhanced the working environment.
Kim Yumi (pseudonym, 55), a worker at the recycling sorting center, said, “Without panels inside the sorting line, it was very cold even when the heater was on. This winter, I think I will be able to work happily in a warm workspace.”
The total number of workers at the Yongsan-gu recycling sorting center is 37, of whom 30 are sorters. The sorting items include PET, plastics, steel cans, aluminum cans, bottles, Styrofoam, paper scraps, and waste vinyl. The sorting rate was 44% as of 2021. Sorters separate recyclables by item on the sorting conveyor belt.
Mayor Seong Jang-hyun of Yongsan-gu said, “With the facility improvement of the recycling sorting center, we can now stably collect and process the increased recycling waste due to COVID-19, and the working environment for the staff has also improved. Along with this, we will also carry out awareness-raising projects so that residents can voluntarily reduce waste disposal.”
