On the 3rd, a petition titled "My father-in-law was diagnosed with leukemia after vaccination" was posted on the Blue House National Petition Board.
The petitioner, identified as Mr. A from Gwangju, Jeollado, stated, "My father-in-law is 68 years old and farms in Yeongam, Jeonnam."
Mr. A said, "(My father-in-law) received the vaccine about two months ago. I understand it was Moderna," adding, "He does not drink or smoke at all but has respiratory rhinitis."
He continued, "Before vaccination, he had inflammation in his body, received treatment, and recovered. After discharge, he received the first dose of the vaccine," and "He then experienced indigestion and back pain. His condition continued to worsen, so he kept visiting the hospital."
Mr. A also said, "About a month after vaccination, (my father-in-law) was in unbearable pain and discomfort, so early in the morning he was taken by ambulance to a hospital in Gwangju," adding, "After blood tests, the hospital said it was serious and recommended going to another hospital, where he was diagnosed with blood cancer (leukemia)."
He stated, "Now, more than two months after vaccination, my father-in-law is struggling day by day in the intensive care unit on a ventilator."
Furthermore, he appealed, "I know there are quite a few people diagnosed with leukemia after vaccination. However, I heard it is difficult for the government to acknowledge a causal relationship with the vaccine," and "Then where should families turn for help? Please help us," concluding his message.
Earlier in August, a petition also stirred controversy, reporting that a healthy man in his 50s died 20 days after receiving the Moderna vaccine.
The petitioner, Mr. B, who identified herself as the deceased man's wife, said, "My husband had a fever for three days after vaccination, endured it by taking fever reducers prescribed by the hospital, and on the third day visited a nearby hospital with a high fever of 39.4 degrees Celsius," adding, "He was then suspected of acute leukemia and transferred to a university hospital, where he fought for 16 days in the intensive care unit but passed away without saying a word to his family."
She continued, "Two months before vaccination, on May 22, my husband's white blood cell count was within the normal range during a health checkup, but after vaccination, the initial diagnosis hospital reported a white blood cell count more than 20 times higher, which was shocking," she lamented.
Ms. B also said, "The government encourages all citizens to get vaccinated, but if there are side effects, they should be disclosed to protect the health of the public and prevent tragedies like my family's from happening again," and "I petition for the South Korean government to investigate all medical actions that led to the death of the head of a happy family."
Meanwhile, health authorities have stated that it is difficult to conclude that COVID-19 vaccines cause acute leukemia.
