Grandmother Who Left Without Revealing Her Name Asked to "Use for Elderly Living Alone and Neighbors in Need"... Gangnam-gu to Use Meaningfully Through Gangnam Welfare Foundation
[Asia Economy Reporter Jongil Park] On the afternoon of the 29th of last month, an anonymous elderly woman estimated to be in her 80s made headlines by generously donating a large sum of money to Gangnam-gu (District Mayor Jeong Soon-gyun).
The elderly woman, who did not reveal any personal information, visited the Welfare Policy Division of Gangnam-gu Office that day and left a white envelope containing a cashier's check worth approximately 152 million won, saying, "Please use this for the elderly living alone and other neighbors in need," before leaving.
Kim Ki-seop (Grade 6), the officer who consulted with the elderly woman at the time, immediately followed her and requested, "Please at least tell us your name," but she crossed the crosswalk in front of the district office without revealing any personal information, including her name, and disappeared after boarding a bus.
The amount donated by the elderly woman to Gangnam-gu was 152,253,670 won, the highest amount of individual donations received by Gangnam-gu. While there have been occasional anonymous donations such as boxes filled with 1,000-won coins or piggy banks, this is the first time such a large amount has been donated.
Gangnam-gu is currently reviewing meaningful ways to use the donation through the Gangnam Welfare Foundation to support low-income groups, including elderly people living alone in the area, in accordance with the noble intention of the elderly woman.
