Russia to Offer Foreign Spent Nuclear Fuel Storage Services Ahead of COP26
[Asia Economy Reporter Dongwoo Lee] Russia has announced that it is ready to provide services for importing and storing spent nuclear fuel from foreign countries.
According to Interfax news agency, Nikolai Patrushev, Secretary of the Russian Security Council, stated this in an interview with domestic media ahead of the 26th United Nations Climate Change Conference of the Parties (COP26).
Patrushev said, "Russia safely stores spent nuclear fuel on its own territory in an environmentally secure manner, and is prepared to import and store it from foreign countries that rely on nuclear power as a major energy source."
He added that Russia supports expanding nuclear power as an alternative to fossil fuel-based power plants and has proposed this idea at various international climate change response meetings.
He claimed, "From raw material extraction to power generation, nuclear power plants emit only 1/70th of the carbon dioxide (CO2) compared to coal-fired power plants, and emit only about one-third of the CO2 compared to clean energy sources like solar power."
